AUA Students and Faculty Engage in Research

Dr. Hrachya Kocharyan
Assistant Professor, AUA Akian College of Science and Engineering

As a Materials Science/Physics experimental researcher, Dr. Hrachya Kocharyan’s research interests are in smart materials, metamaterials, lattice structures, micro- and nanomaterials, mechanical waves, dynamics and control of waves, and optical measurement. At Tallinn University of Technology (2014-2016), he was involved in solar cell research. Then at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, he worked on the development of smart metamaterials.

Currently, he teaches at AUA and is involved in a research project with two undergraduate students to develop an electric nose that can recognize different odors. The students involved in the initial stages of this research are computer science majors with knowledge in machine learning. The next stages will draw students from engineering. Dr. Kocharyan is excited to be a part of the curriculum advances ahead.

“I see my future in research and was very excited for the opportunity to work on this project. We started testing sensors and collecting data for building predictive machine-learning models. I have gained invaluable research skills, significantly improved my hardware knowledge, and learned about machine-learning models. Creating something new is just amazing!”

“I learned about this computerized odor sensing project and was intrigued by it because it seemed very promising. I would love to continue to work on similar projects in the future as research is very exciting and stimulating. I know such research projects will contribute to elevate Armenia on a national and global level.”
